Chocolate was a crowd favorite with his quick feet and fast hands; He was talented, clever, agile and could box or punch; In nearly 150 bouts (some say 152), he lost but nine official contests (some say ten); During his career, he won the Junior Lightweight Championship of the World and a version of the Featherweight Championship of the World (as recognized by New York state)

Among those the "Kid" defeated during his career were Al Singer, Benny Bass, Fidel LaBarba, Bushy Graham, Lew Feldman, Joey Scalfaro, Joe Ghnouly, Vic Burrone, Chick Suggs, Emil Paluso, Eddie Shea, Eddie O'Dowd, Pete Nebo, "Seaman" Tommy Watson, Harry Frankie Wallace, Sankey, Gregorio Vidal, Milton Cohen, Johnny Green, Jackie Schweitzer, Pinky May, Andy Martin and Fillo Julian Echevarria

Charley Rose ranked Chocolate as the #4 All-Time Featherweight; Nat Fleischer ranked him as the #6 All-Time Featherweight; Herb Goldman ranked the "Kid" as the #12 All-Time Featherweight; Chocolate was inducted into the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1959 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994
