Shugrue was a very good boxer who had a short career due to an eye injury; Joe began fighting in 1910 and retired in 1915 due to a detached retina in his right eye; There was also a cataract in his left eye that left him with only partial vision; Joe had two brothers, Johnny and William, who were also boxers
Shugrue accomplished something on March 5, 1912 that most lightweights only dream of when he knocked Benny Leonard out of time in New York
During his career, Joe defeated such men as Leonard, Young McGovern, Young Dyson, "Philadelphia" Pal Moore, Phil Brock, One-Round Hogan, Owen Moran, and Young Saylor
