Ryan was a scrappy fighter during the 1900-1909 years. He was recognized as the "White" World Welterweight Champion during 1904 and 1905.

He owned victories over such men as Clarence Forbes, Walter "Kid" Herrick (2 times), Billy "Honey" Mellody (3 times), Otto Sieloff, Charlie Neary, Jack Bennett, Kid Broad, Gus Gardner, Gilbert "Kid" Goulette, Willie Fitzgerald, Jake Magmer and Tommy Mowatt (3 times)
