Maxim was a talented boxer - very methodical, almost mechanical; He was not a big puncher but was clever and difficult to hit squarely; During his career, he won the Light Heavyweight Championship of the World

He is most famous for his five bout series with Ezzard Charles, his three bouts with Archie Moore and his contest with "Sugar" Ray Robinson; Joey defeated such men as Robinson, Floyd Patterson, "Jersey" Joe Walcott, Jimmy Bivins, Gus Lesnevich, Freddie Mills, Bob Satterfield, "Irish" Bob Murphy, Clarence "Red" Burman, Nate Bolden and Jack "Buddy" Walker

Maxim was inducted into the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1975 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994
