Duilio Loi

BORN    April 19 1929; Trieste, Italy
DIED January 20 2008; Treviso, Italy
HEIGHT  5-4 1/2
WEIGHT  134-149 lbs

Loi was a very talented boxer who was very popular; He had a wonderful career and an unbelievable record; He was not a power hitter but he knew how to fight; In a career of 126 bouts, he lost only 3 contests; During his career, he won the Junior Welterweight Championship of the World, the Welterweight Championship of Europe, the Lightweight Championship of Europe and the Lightweight Championship of Italy

Herb Goldman ranked Loi as the #24 All-Time Lightweight; He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005

Anyone who remembers Duilio Loi goes directly to the Spit Bucket's boxing trivia hall of fame. Loi was an Italian Stallion who fought from 1948 to 1962. He retired with a record of 116-3 with 7 draws & 25 kayos. He was a top rated lightweight contender from '52 thru '60, and most champions avoided him like the plague. Loi was a tough, very slick, even though he brawled, southpaw that recalled a left handed LaMotta; with honed defensive skills.

After Loi had been fighting for 8 frustrating years, Carlos Oritz, the newly created junior welter champ, gave him a shot (in San Francisco of all places...& the Ol' Spit Bucket just so happened to be a live spectator), on May 10th 1960. Loi lost a close decision. At the time, the Ol' Spit Bucket was majorly into my man Carlos . . . but even in the throes of my craze on Carlos, I realized he escaped by a C-hair. The next two fights were in Italy & even the Ol' Spit Bucket was impressed by the fact that the usual EyeTalian European overachiever could make the great Carlos go down twice. Loi clearly won those two bouts over a Prime Time Carlos Ortiz . . . keep in mind that Ortiz went on to win the lightweight title from the equally under-rated "Old Bones" Joe Brown in '62, & from that point on totally dominated the lightweight division for the rest of the decade.

Among Loi's best known victims are former lightweight champ Wallace "Bud" Smith (ko9), Orlando Zuleta, Conny Rudhoff, Eddie Perkins (another forgotten champ, who if not great, was a very slick, strong all around fighter with no weakness'), & of course, Ortiz.

The three losses in his career were all by decision. The first was in 1952 to Jorgen Johansen the tough Dane who was the European Lightweight champion & a top ten contender. The other two were split decision losses to Ortiz & Perkins. All three of those losses were avenged in rematches.

Another interesting note, is that throughout his tenure as World Jr. Welter champion, Loi was also defending his European Welterweight championship against foes such as Fortunato Manca, a top ten welterweight contender! As Loi's career was winding down, he lost the Jr. Welter championship to Eddie Perkins on September 14 1962. Two months later, on December 15 he decisively won his title back & retired a champion.

All in all, a hell of a record & a hell of a fighter!
