Brown was a formidable warrior who owned a sharp jab and a stunning right hand; He fought anybody, any place, any time; Joe fought for 27 years and won the Lightweight Championship of the World, which he defended 12 times

"Old Bones" defeated such men as Virgil Akins, Jimmy Carter, Kenny Lane, Wallace "Bud" Smith, Isaac Logart, Orlando Zulueta, Joey Lopes, Johnny Busso, Cisco Andrade, Dave Charnley, Ralph Dupas, Lester Felton, Arthur Persley, Danny Womber, Teddy "Red Top" Davis, Paolo Rosi, Raymundo "Battling" Torres and Armand Savoie

Herb Goldman ranked Brown as the #15 All-Time Lightweight; Joe was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1987 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1996
