Carlos Teo Cruz
(Carlos Teofilo Rosario Cruz)

BORN   November 24 1937; Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic (Some sources report November 4 1937)
DIED February 15 1970; off the coast of the Dominican Republic (plane crash)

TRAINER Saso Betancourt

Cruz was not a hard hitter but was a busy fighter with a good chin; He had a brief amateur career and began his professional career in an up-and-down fashion, winning 7 of his first fourteen bouts; The more he fought, the better he got; He finished with a record of 43-13-2 and lost only two of his last 27 bouts; One of the losses was on cuts

Had the tragic plane crash not occurred, his star may have shone even brighter; During his career, he won the WBC Lightweight Championship of the World and the WBA Lightweight Championship of the World

Carlos defeated such men as Carlos Ortiz, Armando "Mando" Ramos, Chico Vejar, Vicente Derado, Paul Armstead, Frankie Taylor, Frankie Narvaez, Leslie "Bunny" Grant and Victor Melendez
