Starling was a talented fighter who proved it by winning the WBA Welterweight Championship of the World and the WBC Welterweight Championship of the World; He also won the NABF Welterweight Championship and the USBA Welterweight Championship; At times, his performance was sparkling; At other times, it was lackluster; However, his overall record is quite impressive

Marlon was knocked out by Tomas Molinares in a 1988 Welterweight Championship bout with a blow clearly thrown after the bell had rung; A poor judgment call allowed the blow to stand; The verdict was later changed but Starling did not retain the title

During his career, he defeated such men as Lloyd Honeyghan, Simon Brown, Mark Breland, Floyd Mayweather, Bruce "Mouse" Strauss, Kevin Howard, Jose "the Treat" Baret, Tommy Ayers, Lupe Aquino, Fujio Ozaki and Yung-Kil Chung
