Harry Laing
BORN 1861; Blenheim, New Zealand
(Early sources reported 1862)
DIED April 12 1894; Fordell, New Zealand (railway accident)
HEIGHT 5-9 (Some sources report 5-11)
WEIGHT 176-185 lbs
RECORD 33-2-3 (32 KO, 3 ND, 13 EX)
Laing was a two-handed fighter and a very hard hitter who was strong and tough but possessed few boxing skills; He was determined, durable, willing and game - a man who came to fight; During his career, he won the Heavyweight Championship of Australia and Heavyweight Championship of New Zealand

The "New Zealand Referee" newspaper (5/11/1888) reported that Laing was said to be a half-caste Maori; However, Laing's mother was reportedly a European, born in Tasmania, and his father was a half-caste, a Spanish Mulatto; It seems that Laing had not a drop of Maori blood

Harry defeated such men as Joe Goddard, Dick Matthews, Owen Sullivan, Charlie "Darkey" Richardson, John Cunningham and Starlight (Edward Rollins)
