Gully was a skillful, intelligent pugilist who was fast, strong, tough and ambitious; He was a boxer of superior science but his short career hindered him from displaying his true capability

He was one of the wealthiest and most famous, respected of the early British champions; He enjoyed the friendship and respect of many of the highest families in England

John was inducted into the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1959
