Gilmore was an outstanding lightweight during his day; He is most famous for his marathon battles with Jack McAuliffe, Sam Bittle, Billy Hawkins, Danny Needham and Jimmy Lindsey

He later ran a boxing school in Chicago and tutored many famous boxers - Jimmy Barry, Harry Forbes, Eddie Santry, Billy Stift, George Kirwin and Frank Garrard among them
