Darcy was short, strong and muscular with long arms, a talented fighter who could box or punch; He was the Australian Middleweight Champion and Australian Heavyweight Champion by age 19; He neither smoked nor drank and was never knocked out; Les became an Australian folk hero upon his death at a young age; He is ranked among the greatest fighters from Australia and New Zealand along with Peter Jackson, Bob Fitzsimmons and Frank "Paddy" Slavin

Jack Stitt, boxing historian, wrote that Darcy "was never actually hurt in the ring, never knocked down, never cut, never staggered, and so strong and powerful" that he just made his opponents look second-rate

During his career, he won the Middleweight Championship of the World (as recognized bu Australia), the Heavyweight Championship of Australia and the Middleweight Championship of Australia

Nat Fleischer ranked Darcy as the #8 All-Time Middleweight; Herb Goldman ranked him as the #11 All-Time Middleweight; Les was inducted into the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1957, the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1993, the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003
