Berlenbach was an amateur wrestler turned boxer; He had fair boxing skills but was a hard hitter; He won the Light Heavyweight Championship of the World during his career

Berlenbach defeated such men as W.L. "Young" Stribling, Jack Delaney, Mike McTigue, Jimmy Slattery, Joe "Hambone" Kelly, Frank Carpenter, Larry Estridge, Jack Reddick, Tony "Young" Marullo, "Fighting" Bob Lawson and Billy Conley

Charley Rose ranked Berlenbach as the #6 All-Time Light Heavyweight; Nat Fleischer ranked him as the #10 All-Time Light Heavyweight; Berlenbach was inducted into the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1971 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001
