Ambers had an outstanding record, losing only 8 bouts in 104 contests; Not a knockout hitter, Lou was an aggressive fighter and clever in his approach; He was stopped only twice - by Lew Jenkins - and these two losses occurred in his last three fights; During his career, he won the Lightweight Championship of the World; He was a cousin of Marty Servo

Lou defeated such men as Henry Armstrong, Tony Canzoneri, Fritzie Zivic, Frankie Klick, Pedro Montanez, Sammy Fuller, Johnny Jadick, Alberto "Baby" Arizmendi, Al "Bummy" Davis, Davey Day, Harry Dublinsky, Frankie Wallace, Jimmy Garrison and Paul Junior

Herb Goldman ranked Ambers as the #20 All-Time Lightweight; Lou was inducted into the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1964, the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1982 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992
