"Ad" Wolgast
(Adolph Wolgast)
(the "Michigan Wildcat")

BORN   February 8 1888; Cadillac, Michigan
DIED April 14 1955; Camarillo, California
HEIGHT 5-4 1/2
WEIGHT 118-133 lbs
MANAGER Frank Mulkern, Tom Jones, Larney Lichtenstein
RECORD 61-13-16 (42 KO, 50 ND, 6 EX)

Wolgast was a scrappy, durable, determined "brawler deluxe" with great stamina and a stiff punch; He could hand out the punishment and take it too; Despite his give-and-take style, he lost only one official decision in his first 89 contests; Ad is most famous for his 1910 Lightweight Championship bout against Oscar "Battling" Nelson when he won the title - and accomplished the impossible - by outlasting Nelson

Late in his career and afterwards, Wolgast was taken ill and experienced a loss of memory; He was cared for by Jack Doyle (of Los Angeles, California) and eventually sent to a sanitarium

Charley Rose ranked Wolgast as the #9 All-Time Lightweight; Ad was elected to the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1958 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2000
