ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL

Discussing with a friend the history of boxing and the virtues of dignity in warfare throughout the twenties, thirties & forties, when suddenly comes Hector Camancho Jr. dressed like a shiek riding a camel to the ring and during the introductions sashaying around like a fairy zigzagging down Castro St., San Francisco, dreaming of Gorgeous George.

He has a nameless opponent across the ring but the cameraman is mesmerized by Jr.. This is 2001 I remind myself. The cameraman probably has a hard-on. The camel may be mechanical. Maybe Hector isn't real but something invented by networks to boast rating.

In the meantime I imagine they have ESPN in heaven. I imagine Jack Dempsey and Henry Armstrong laughing like hell. My friend, "The Bucket" faces south and salutes Sonny Liston. Hector continues to preen himself like a parrot. All things being egual, Gorgeous George would have kicked his ass.
