Ruiz selected as Individual Athlete of the Year

3rd annual Boston Sports Awards

BOSTON - Chelsea boxer John "The Quietman" Ruiz - the uncrowned heavyweight champion of the world - was selected as the Individual Athlete of the Year 2000 at last night's (Tuesday, Sept. 18) 3rd annual Boston Sports Awards.

Ruiz received his award from Boston Bruins defenseman Don Sweeney and Fox Sports Net New England's Kara Henderson. John and WBMX disc jockey Lynne Hoffman presented New England Patriots safety Lawyer Milloy with the Player of the Year Award.

After congratulating the four other nominees in the category he won, Ruiz thanked his wife, Sahara, children, John and Jocelyn, and members of Ruiz' Corner from the Somerville Boxing Club. "I'd also like to thank all the fans in Boston who have supported me, especially those who went to my fight (controversial 12-round loss to Evander Holyfield for the WBA heavyweight
championship) in Las Vegas," he said. "My only regret is that I didn't win the world heavyweight championship. The next time, though, I'll bring home
the belt to Boston."
