Knott Street Amateur Boxing show

Over half a century the Knott Street Boxing Club based at matt Dishman Community Center on Knott Street in Portland, Oregon has produced hundreds of well-schooled amateur boxers. Dozens of national amateur champions, at least one professional world champ and many top ranked pros learned their fistic ABC’s inside the echoing cinderblock walls of the Dishman gym. On Saturday, Jan. 27 the Knott St. club presented its annual winter show, with teams from all over Oregon and Washington competing. An honored guest was Dishman graduate, and former world ranked pro lightweight, Ray Lampkin of Portland. organized by the current Knott st. coaches, Joel Caldera and Rudy Garza, the 12 bout show started on time and ran smoothly for an enthusiaistic crowd. Results were as follows:

JUNIOR BOUTS--Under 16 years of age. Bouts are three rounds long. Rounds may last one minute for younger and less expereinced juniors, or one and a half to two minutes.

--65 lbs, 9-10 years, Jerrell Barbour of Tacoma Boxing Club in Tacoma, WA won over Junior Martinez of the West Portland Boxing Club in Portland, OR.

--100 lbs, 13-14 years, Justin Watson of West Portland won over Palino Ruiz of Wilsonville Boxing.

--115 lbs, 14-15 years, Yiar Perez of West Portland won over Rolando Ramirez of Knott Street Boxing Club in Portland.

SPECIAL SENIOR BOUTS--16 years or over with less than ten bouts experience. Each bout consists of three rounds, each lasting two minutes.

--165 lbs, Special Senior, Gerrod Hathaway of Self Defense Boxing Club in Klamath Falls, OR won over Reggie Lowe of South Park Boxing Club in Seattle, WA.

--185 lbs, Special Senior, Rocky Evans of Central oregon Boxing Club in Bend, OR won over Scott Ore of Self Defense Boxing in Klamath Falls, OR.

--170 lbs, Special Senior, Jim Huey of West Portland won over Beau Fisher of Wilsonville Boxing in Wilsonville, OR.

--147 lbs, Special Senior, Will Hughes of Tacoma Boxing Club won over Jason Davis of the Knott Street Boxing Club.

--147 lbs, Special Senior, Robbie Newport of West Eugene Boxing Club in Eugene, OR won over Brian Van Ruyan of Self Defense Boxing when the referee stopped the contest after three standing 8 counts in the first round.

--156 lbs, Special Senior, Jose Gasteazoro of West Portland Boxing won over Keith Cunningham of West Eugene Boxing.

OPEN SENIOR BOUTS--Boxers are 16 years or older with ten or more bouts of experience. Bouts are either three rounds of three minutes each, or four rounds of two minutes each.

--135 lbs, Open Senior, Juan Roman of West Portland Boxing won over David Torrez of Othello Boxing Club in Othello, WA.

--135 lbs, Open Senior, Cordell Barbour of Tacoma Boxing won over Gabriel Garza of Othello Boxing Club.

--169 lbs, Open Senior, George Caldera of Knott Street Boxing won over Jeff Lenard of Sweethome Boxing in Sweet Home, OR over four rounds of two minutes each.
