Dave Shade was a top-five welterweight and middleweight contender
from 1921 until 1934. Shade got his start at the age of 15 on the
4-round circuit in California where many of the Heavyweights of the day,
including Jack Dempsey, were active. Fighting on the 4-round circuit
helped Shade develop a high-energy, bob-and-weave attack.
Shade also had a great jab and an assortment of other punches.
Not a big puncher, Shade was still trouble for most fighters, unless
they had the skills to keep him off. In 219 recorded fights, Shade
was stopped only twice.

In 1921 World Welterweight champ Jack Britton traveled to Portland to face the
essentially unknown Shade, who had taken his act to the Northwest.
Britton was floored early and appeared to be beaten by the upstart
Shade, but the bout was called a draw. Shade had made some
noise back in New York, and he was quickly brought back East.

Shade had success as he came back East, though he did suffer a stoppage
loss to Mickey Walker when he broke his hand. He was then gaven a title
shot at the 36-year-old Britton, who was nearly twice his age.
Shade waded in and threw a bunch of punches, but was ineffective while
Britton exhibited his boxing skills. Shade's agresssion matched well with
Britton's generalship, and they received another draw verdict.

Shade continued to win for the next few years, but he was essentially
stuck in the same place. Mickey Walker meanwhile had won the
Welterweight title and had decided to challenge Harry Greb for the
Middleweight title. Shade was given an opportunity to fight on the
undercard against Jimmy Slattery. Slattery who was a Light Heavyweight,
had been hyped to a level similar to what Mark Breland was during the
80's. Shade who was still a Welterweight, was given little chance. Shade
beat the odds though, and jumped all over Slattery, dropping him three
times before stopping him in the third. With this win, Shade ended the
myth of Jimmy Slattery and in turn had propelled himself back in the
limelight.

A match was then set up with Mickey Walker, who had lost to Greb, at
Yankee Stadium. In facing Greb, Walker had fought the perfect tuneup for
Shade, who was essentially a "poor-man's" Greb. As Gene Tunney had
figured out in his rematch with Greb, the secret to beating that style
lie in a body attack. Sure enough when the two met, Walker stuck to
Shade's ribs, nulifying his attack. Shade took the fight outside for
awhile in the middle rounds, but Walker caught up to him again. Walker won the disputed decision.

After the loss to Walker, Shade remained a dangerous contender, beating
a host of top contenders like: Roland Todd, Frank Moody, Walcott
Lanfrod, Bert Colima, George Courtney, Rene DeVos, Ace Hudkins, Ben
Jeby, Al Gainer, Ambrose Palmer, and Bob Turner. Shade eventually moved
up to Middleweight, but moving up with him was Mickey Walker. Having
lost to Walker convincingly for the title, Shade was stuck with the fact
that he would have to settle for being a top contender till he retired.
Shade also had two older brothers fought, George and Billy; the latter a
Light Heavy who tangled with Billy Miske, Young Stribling, and Harry
Greb.
