Olivares was an extremely popular fighter who possessed explosive hitting power; He won the WBC Featherweight Championship of the World, the WBA Featherweight Championship of the World, the WBC Bantamweight Championship of the World and the WBA Bantamweight Championship of the World during his career

Ruben defeated such men as Jesus "Chucho" Castillo, Bobby Chacon, Jose Luis Ramirez, Alan Rudkin, Salvatore Burruni, Lionel Rose, Jose Medel, Takao Sakurai, Zensuke Utagawa, Art Hafey, Godfrey Stevens, Jesus Pimentel, Kid Pascualito, Efren Torres and Jose Arranz

Herb Goldman ranked Olivares as the #3 All-Time Bantamweight; He was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1985 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991
