SHORT TRIAL OVER
The courtroom action taking place in New York City this week has been all about contracts
and whether a certain one is still valid.
In June, Felix Trinidad and his father Felix Sr. bolted from promoter Don King and soon
thereafter signed with the Duva promotional machine, Main Events Inc. of Totowa. NJ.
THE FELIX'S SAY...
That their pact with Don King expired this past June 12.
THE DON SAYS
He has another two years with Trinidad. And he says he has the paperwork to prove it.
LARRY MERCHANT SAYS...
That the contract Trinidad inked with King was a lifetime pact with no room for escape.
WHAT THE JUDGE SAYS...
Will matter the most. Judge Lawrence McKenna of the Federal Court in New York City had as
of Thursday afternoon, heard all the testimony he was going to. Final briefs were
submitted, and the Judge is expected to make a decision sometime early next week.
PEDRO SAYS...
The only ones that win in these courtroom skirmishes are the lawyers.
IF KING WINS...
Look for him to come down hard on the Duva's, HBO, and anybody else who he thinks
facilitated Tito's desertion.
IF TITO WINS
Then King is left with only one true superstar in Evander Holyfield. And how long can
Holyfield keep going?
KING'S BEEN DOWN BEFORE AND UNLIKE...
Anybody else, Don King picks himself and up and starts over. But there are people
whispering that the now 67 year old King has "had it" with boxing. That's he's
ready to say screw it. Not so!
EVERYBODY THOUGHT HE WAS DEAD MEAT...
Recently because the wire haired promoter was facing Fraud charges. But he was acquitted.
It was in the time around his trial that his competitors were making moves on his
fighters.
At the same time, other longtime King aides were jumping ship like rats. And to seize the
moment of the conviction, Magic Johnson was going to come out and say that he and Frank
Warren were about to take over boxing by being the new promoter on the block.
OTHER KING LITIGATION
Earlier this week, Cedric Kushner Promotions filed a $12 million suit against King for
among other things, Torturous Interference with heavyweight Hasim Rahman.
Cedric alleges that King induced Hasim to take $150 K and then sign a contract, all the
while according to Cedric, Rahman was under contract to him.
HASIM LEFT TWICE
The first time promoter Kushner patched things up. The second time, Rahman said it was a
sore hand preventing him from fighting on HBO September 26, against David Tua.
BACK TO STAY?
As of this week, Rahman is back in the Kushner camp. The pair held a press conference
earlier this week announcing the suit against King.
