Nevada Lifts Suspension on Hands of Stone--Duran Fights
Saturday
On Aug. 10, Dr. Flip Homansky of the Nevada Athletic
Commission formally removed the name of Roberto Duran from the
National Suspension List. Nevada placed Duran on the list in 1998
following his KO by William Joppy.
The suspension listing stated that Duran must have a complete
neurological examination and a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
test approved by Dr.
Homansky.
Homansky wrote that Duran's name should be removed from the
suspension list because he had taken both the MRI and a complete
neurological exam.
Duran remained on the list while he fought twice outside the U.S.
since the suspension. The Yakama Nation Legends Casino in
Toppenish, Washington
booked Duran to fight in the U.S. for the first time since his
loss to Joppy. The 49 year-old former champion will headline a pro
fight card on Saturday, Aug. 12, in a scheduled ten round main
event against 30 year-old P.J. Goossen, who is coming out of
retirement for the occasion.
The Yakama Tribal Boxing Commission also required Duran to take
and pass
an electro encephalograph (EEG), and an EKG to check the health of
his heart in addition to the tests requested by Nevada. Duran also
passed the licensing physical, and blood tests for HIV and
hepatitis as well as the drug screening.
The Duran-Goossen main event tops a six-bout card at the Legends
Casino.
Also on this card --a ten round Women's International Boxing
Federation Americas title bout at 126 lbs, Kelsey Jeffries (7-1)
of Gilroy, CA meets Cynthia Prouder (5-7) now fighting out
of Freddie Roach's Wildcard Boxing
Gym in Los Angeles.
