The Yakama tribe spent their money on garnish this time out, with a
reported $50,000 going to one of the dynamic duos of boxing history, Sugar
Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran. The old rivals are pards in public
relations now, and are sharing this appearance at the Legends Casino to
sign autographs, smile for pics with fans and generally make nice.
On the actual boxing card, two fighters from Ray Leonard's Washington
D.C. stable are the attention grabbers.
In the ten round Jr middleweight main event, undefeated 26 year-old Luther
Smith (17-0-1, 10 KO's) of Washington D.C. is scheduled to dance with 28
year-old Francisco Mendez of Mexico, who sports a 12-17, 6 KO record. No
mystery there.
Another Leonard fighter, 26 year-old DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley, 21-1-1,
12 KO, takes his dancing, fast-but-powerless stylistics in against
Francisco's younger brother, 27 year-old Daniel Mendez (8-11, 4 KO's) of
Mexico. This may be a six or an eight depending on how the card lays out
and the results seem pretty predictable.
The most competitive of the three Mendez brother's bouts on this card may
be the scheduled four rounder in which 25 year-old Carloz Mendez (3-1-1, 1
KO) of Mexico takes on wily veteran Ron Warren (8-4, 3 KO) of Kent, WA.
Also on the Undercard
Local welter Alphonso "Scooter" Meza of Zillah, WA is set for six with
Salvador Montes.
A pair of Texas women are scheduled for six: Snowdene Blakeney vs Gloria
Ramirez.
And a Jr. middleweight four rounder sets 27 year-old Carson Gauthreaux
(2-2) vs 26 year-old Norris Ellington (1-5, 1 KO) of California.
The promoter is Patrick Ortiz' Ringside Ticket, Inc. Matchmaker is Peter
Brody.
