Dariusz Michalczewski vs. Montell Griffin
Bremen - 25 August 1999. Montell Griffin, the 29-year-old from Chicago, likes to play it cool. Many world title challengers, who talk big the days leading to their upcoming fight, seemingly try to win the battle already before the first bell - at least the battle of words so to speak.
That's not the case with Montell Griffin, who will challenge Dariusz Michalczewski next Saturday for the German's WBO Lightheavyweight laurels in Bremen. The man, who calls himself "Ice", didn't attend today's public workout in a shopping mall in Bremen's inner city, calling off without giving a reason. Not only this little psychological game from Griffin makes it clear that the former conquererer of Roy Jones came to Germany to cause an upset. The fight is evenly important for both, because the winner might get a shot at Roy Jones Jr., who must defend his WBC title first against another German, Graciano Rocchigiani, who tentatively agreed on a 6th November date.
The fight will be televised by "live ran - SAT.1 - BOXEN" on Saturday from 22:40. The undercard will begin at 20:00.
