Dariusz Michalczewski to defend against Montell Griffin: Fabian Weber

Bremen - 29 July 1999. There is a good and a bad message. The bad one is that the original scheduled challenger of WBO Lightheavyweight Champion Dariusz Michalczewski called off. The hard punching American David Telesco, who had an unexpected tough fight last weekend suffering swellings at his eye, pulled out this week.

The good message is that the fighter who matchmaker Hedi Taouab was able to arrange as replacement is even better. On 28 August it will be the former WBC Lightheavyweight Champion Montell Griffin, 38-2 (27 KO´s), who will challenge Michalczewski for the German’s WBO laurels.

The 29-year-old Montell "Ice" Griffin from Chicago twice conquered two-division Champion James Toney and became, to date, the only man to defeat Roy Jones Jr., when he won by disqualification against the American super star in 1997. Many insiders argue that Griffin was ahead on points, when Jones commited a serious foul, landing two punches while Griffin was down on one knee.

After Griffin had been surprised by Jones, who overwhelmed him in the opening round of their rematch, the man from Chicago won seven fights in a row. In November of 1998 Griffin dropped a controversial split decision to the undefeated Eric Harding. Since then "Ice" won four fights straight by knockout.

It will be the 16th title defense of the 31-year-old undefeated Dariusz Michalczewski, 40-0 (33 KO´s), who also held the WBA and IBF belts and a Cruiserweight World Title.

The fight will take place in the Stadthalle Bremen and will be televised live by Sat1.
