Juan Carlos Gomez vs. Marcelo Dominguez
THE REMATCH
WBC World Cruiserweight Championship
On Saturday, 20 February 1999
Alsterdorfer Sporthalle, Hamburg

"This fight is going to be a rematch against myself", the Argentinian Marcelo Dominguez stated at the pre-fight press conference in Hamburg today. "I know exactly the mistakes I have done in the first fight. I hope that I can do everything better this time. It's a revenge against the whole world."

This Saturday Dominguez will take on German-based Cuban Juan Carlos Gomez in a rematch of their encounter in 1998, in which Gomez dethroned the reigning WBC cruiserweight champion in an exciting 12-round fight in front of the Argentinian's home turf (foto). The event, which is promoted by Hamburg's Universum Box-Promotion, will also feature the second title defense of European heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, 23-0 (23 KO´s), in the co-main event.

"After I had displayed weight difficulties last year, nobody believed that I could make the cruiserweight limit anymore", 'El Toro' Dominguez said. "Saturday will be a special day for me."

"In our first fight I didn't care enough about my defense", the Cuban cruiserweight champion remembers. "This time I want to use my reach more effective", predicted Gomez, who stands 6 feet 4 inches (1,92m) and has a huge reach of 80 inches (2,02m).

Since Gomez captured the title he defended it three times with quick knockouts, running his undefeated record to 26-0 with 22 KO´s. Dominguez at the same time scored four wins himself, two of them inside the distance, improving his record to 26-2-1 with 14 knockouts.

The 29 year old Dominguez is the number 1 of the WBC and thus Gomez' mandatory challenger.

"Gomez and Dominguez are two of the three best cruiserweights in the world today", promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl swarmed. "Everybody who has seen their first fight knows how good Gomez had to perform in order to win. This matchup is the best that can be made in the cruiserweight division today."

"In the end it will be a fight man against man once again", the 25 year old Gomez predicted. "Only one fighter can win. I don't want to lose and he doesn't want either. So let's get it on!"
