Erne was a very good boxer who began fighting in 1891 and did not lose a contest until 1897 inspite of having bouts against Joe Gans, George Dixon, Young Griffo, "Solly" Smith, Casper Leon and George Siddons during those years

At his peak, he was a highly skilled fighter as evidenced by his wins over Gans, Dixon, George "Kid" Lavigne, Dal Hawkins, George "Elbows" McFadden and "Chicago" Jack Daly

Erne carried a good punch along with his excellent boxing talent and is another capable fighter who never received just credit for his skills
