COLLINS RETAINS BELT AFTER EARLY SHOCK

Steve Collins ended the gutsy challenge of Craig Cummings with a third round stoppage tonight in Glasgow, Scotland. The Irishman went over from a right hand 12 seconds into the fight, much to the astonishment of the crowd, but proceeded to rally back and floor Cummings late in the opener.

Collins proceeded to apply steady presssure in the second and third rounds and by the halfway mark in round three fireman Cummings (who incidentally weighed 160.5 lbs to Collins' 167.5) had nothing left to offer, and was rightly rescued by the referee.

Paradoxically, Cummings has gained admirers in defeat and has nothing to be ashamed of. In flooring Collins, he has achieved what many (including banger Nigel Benn) could not, and Cummings actually came into this fight 7 pounds lighter than the champion at 160.5 lbs.

This was Collins' seventh successful defence of the WBO super middleweight crown he won from Chris Eubank two years ago. After the fight, he expressed a desire to either challenge Dariusz Michelawski (a recent winner over Virgil Hill) for the IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight titles or meet WBA super middleweight champ Frankie Liles in a unification match.
